Tardy to the Party

First things first: If you have not yet voted for MerciBlahBlah in the VoiceBox Top Moms Who Blog Fashion & Beauty, it would be PHANTASMAGORIC if you did. And contrary to what I said initially, you can only vote once per IP address for the next 32 days. So. Click here, go there, and voila! Pretty please? Thank you!

Well, since Sunday night was the series finale of Breaking Bad, Tom and I figured we would start watching it. Way to be ahead of the curve, Shan. We finished the first season (well, Tom finished it - I watched some and fell asleep during some, but only because WE CAN NEVER START WATCHING TV UNTIL 9 P.M., AND I AM NOT A 20-YEAR-OLD OUT FOR A RAVE ANYMORE).

And also? I FINALLY put together an ensemble to wear with my sneaks. I love it. It was MUY comfortable, and if people thought I was channeling Working Girl a la 1988, so be it.

Frankly, I don't know why it took me THIS long to do it.

I'm going to have to come up with some other Lady Working In New York Walking In Her Tennis Shoes and Business Suit ensembles.

Maybe my track jacket, graphic tee, leather pencil skirt and kicks?

Hmmmm...methinks I like that idea.

Stay tuned...

And if you're a Breaking Bad watcher, are you new to the party? Devastated? Ready to move on to a different show?

Grunge

I am coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs over this season's mash-up of 90s grunge and punk. For real - I didn't even love grunge this much the FIRST time it came around in the heyday of Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, et al. Back in the days of yore, as it were.

I mean, I always love a plaid once the weather turns chillier, but this time around, I love it even more.

I got this plaid shirt for Tom a year or two ago at Target and have probably worn it more than he ever will. I had never considered wearing it this way again until recently, and loved it. Wore it over jeans shorts, a tee, and moccasins one cool weekend night and loved that look too.

And I maaay have scored a pair of skinny red plaid pantalones at Forever 21 the other day. They are so badass punky brewster I cannot WAIT to wear them.

What is it about plaid, that it can go school girl or Sid Vicious at the drop of a hat? I don't know, but I love it.

What about you? Are you loving plaid and the 90s redux for fall?

How do you plan to wear it? Don't be stingy - spill the beans!

P.S.
I am honored to have been nominated for VoiceBoks The Voice of Parenthood's Top 50 Moms Who Blog About Fashion. I would love it if you took a minute to vote for me. Red Carpet Recap: Emmy's Schmemmy's

First of all, I'll say I haven't even finished watching the Emmy's yet, cuz - HELLO - final night of Dexter was on last night, and by the by - what the FUCK was that ending????? I was hoping it would be something magnificent like the final episode of Six Feet Under? But no. We got...that...

Anyhoo - I did jot down a few thoughts about the red carpet fashion before hand, so let's get to it. In no particular order, mainly cuz I'm too lazy this morning:

Anna Faris: Big Bird called and wants his RuPaul's Drag Race Finale dress back. Look, the style of the dress is gorgeous on her, but the color is turrible, and don't get me started on the hair. It looks like a bad wig.

And now, Sister Wives in da HOUSE....

Amanda Peet: Is this a joke?

and her sister wife sistah...

Aubrey Plaza: Glamour by Gunne Sax....

Claire Danes: I think she almost always gets it right on the R.C. I don't love this as much as some that she has worn, but it is gorgeous. I also thought on camera her makeup was GORGEOUS. The perfect way to do a minimal makeup with a bold lip, but in photos, it didn't translate.

Cat Deeley: My Number One Girl Crush...I'm sad to say this is not my favorite Cat look. You can't see it in this photo, but the dress has a peplum that made her look hippy, which she totally ISN'T.

Elisabeth Moss: This may be the best she has looked on the R.C. in my humble opinion. Not to mention that this dress reminds me of a vintage dress of my mom's that I wore in high school, so I had an automatic affection for it.

Julie Bowen: Is another of my girl crushes, but this is just too much dress for her. I think she looks best in sleek column gowns. This one overwhelms her, and the fit in the bodice looks a bit wonky - almost too big or something.

Julianne Hough: AREN'T WE FINISHED WITH THE SHEER DRESSES OVER GRANNIE PANTIES YET????

Julia Louis Dreyfus: One of my favorites of the night. DOES THIS WOMAN NEVER AGE????!!!

Kate Mara: Another favorite. When I looked back to pick photos for this post, I realized my favorites were the most simple dresses. Huh. Go figure...

Lena Dunham: I wanted to like this. I really did. I think the print and colors are actually gorgeous, but the proportions of the dress seem so odd to me on her. What I can appreciate about her though, is that her makeup is always cool and funky. And in the opposite issue as with Claire Danes' too minimal in photos makeup, this almost looks crazy, but on camera I LOVE LOVE LOVED it. Her eyes are really gorgeous, and that is what I always think when I see her at a fancy event - they just glow.

Malin Ackerman: You've heard of the Bride of Frankenstein, no? This is Bride of the Mummy. I kept fearing she was going to have a nip-slip. Unfortunate fit.

Padma Lakshmi: One of my top three dresses of the night. LOVE the minimal dress, and would cut a bitch for that cuff.

Rose Byrne: Another top three. This is almost perfection. I say almost, cuz I would have gone with a little bit more as far as a bracelet. Still, she looks amazing.

Robin Wright: I have loved her ever since her days as Kelly Capwell on Santa Barbara, but I CANNOT with that short hair on her. She is a gorgeous, gorgeous woman, and I actually love this dress, but I just feel like that hair is doing her no favors.

Sarah Hyland: Looked SO PRETTY on camera last night, but in this photo, that makeup is way too dark. Still, love the dress, love the jurreys.

And now for the Va-Va VOOOOOM portion of the night...

Sarah Silverman: Personal Best. In a $60 dress, no less. Freaking gorgeous.

Tina Fey: Hubba hubba!! Love this on her. Her boobs look spectacular.

And the Honey, NO....Award goes to....

Zosia Mamet: This dress makes me sad. Cuz when they did the camera scroll-down, I actually loved the print - it really is truly gorgeous. But that boob bib/shield thing R-U-I-N-E-D the rest of the dress. What the F#$K?!!! Seriously. I want to know. What IS that? What is the purpose? Is it a sleep mask for her breasts, holding down a lobster bib? I DON'T GET IT. Can the designer please kindly re-make this sans boob bib? Please and thank you.

So let's hear it, kids. Who did you like? Who did you hate? Who made you clutch your pearls in shock and awe?

Happy Monday, yo!

Merci,
Shan

Rumpus Time Is OVER!

You know how sometimes you see something that just inspires you to WRITE? Well, this weekend I came across this clip on the internet, and it just SPOKE to me:

I have never seen the movie before, but really feel like there has been a hidden camera in my house filming to capture the dialogue, which could have come DIRECTLY from our conversations with the kids.

Well, except for "RUMPUS TIME IS OVER!!!" But which I fully intend to incorporate immediately in the Casa de Blah Blah vernacular.

But seriously? All the talk of activities? I don't know what it is with our kids, and Simon in particular, but every day there is much ballyhoo about their "activities," so much so that in the mornings, Simon will come downstairs, and lay out an "activity" for each person at the kitchen table. Hell, they have even taken to putting their "activities" under their pillows at night, so they are ready IMMEDIATELY to go straight into activity mode upon awakening.

I feel like I should start calling Simon by the name Julie, and get him a job as a cruise director on board the Love Boat or something.

Wow - who would have thought the movie Stepbrothers is what wedged me out of my writing rut? THANK YOU, Will Ferrell.

Random (p)Inspirations: I'm Falling For You

....falling for you...get it? Cuz we're (hopefully, please Mother Nature?) moving into fall and away from these damn 100 degree days (pretty please????). So I'm sharing some of my favorite autumnal (p)Inspirations. Well, becept for this first photo.

Which is just plain old gorgeous. Rudolph Nureyev. I tore this photo out of a magazine and taped it in my closet when I was in high school. My parents weren't thrilled with it, but at least it was a change from the Duran Duran posters that were literally hanging from my ceiling because there was no more wall space.

Can't you just smell that bonfire?

Cozy wozy.

I am in dire need of some plaid for the fall. Preferably plaid wool skinnies and a shirt or three. I saw a plaid shirt from Anthropologie or someplace similar online the other day for something insane like $98, and I was all, hmmm...I could probably hit up the thrift store and get 100 plaid shirts for that price. Ridic. Or for those of you who don't thrift, I can tell you for a fact you can score a brand new plaid shirt at TJ Maxx for $16. Saw them there yesterday. BAM. You're welcome.

Apparently I also need a large vest to wear with a tee and leather skinnies. Who knew?

Tomato cobbler with rosemary gruyere biscuits? Um, OKAY.

That watercolor wallpaper is the JAM.

Don't you just want to throw yourself on the floor in this room and spoon that dog? No? Just me? Oh well....

Have a fantabulous weekend, kids!

Merci,
Shan

Kids These Days

I KNOW I have been phoning it in lately on MBB, and I apologize. This school thing has me in a twirl. As soon as I get home from work (which I'm back to full time officially, for the first time since before the kiddos were born), it's slap some dinner on the table, homework times three, and by then, it's usually time to start getting everyone ready for bed. On weekends I have officially become a soccer mom since the kids started playing last weekend, plus I am trying to get more workouts in to get ready for the Foam Fest, in which I am participating with a group of moms in my hood (go Lakewood Land Sharks!) on October 5. OY VEY.

A few weeks back, Scarlett, who has always been a Daddy's girl and makes no bones about it, was in a phase where she really liked to VOCALIZE just which one of us she loved, and who she didn't.

In fact, she was bringing home pictures from school each day that she had drawn of "My Family," which depicted everyone EXCEPT me. One in particular had Tom, the boys, Nana, Aunt Jenny, and three of her cousins. When I asked where Mommy was, she replied, "I didn't have room for you." SHOT THROUGH THE HEART....I can only imagine what her teacher thinks of me.

One morning, while I was combing out her hair before school - a laborious process because she has a lot of curly curly hair that is like a rat's nest after she has slept on it - and which, I might add, her FATHER never touches a comb to, Scarlett said, "I love Daddy. I don't love you." I asked her, "How would you feel if I told you that I loved your brothers but not you?" and she just shrugged, nonplussed. She said it again, and I said, "Okay - I don't want to hear that anymore. I'm done with it, so stop saying it." She looked me in the face and said, "Fine. I will say it in my head. But I will be looking at YOU."

DEVIL CHILD.

After that incident, things actually have gotten a little better. She has never been as expressive emotionally as the boys, who will voluntarily come up and hug me and say they love me. Really, Scarlett doesn't even do that to Tom, who she loves most of all. Still, I would LOVE to hear from any of you who have a kid like this, and how you handle it.

I mean, besides sending them to military academy.
