WWD: Open Water

This post isn't just a Women's Wear Daily post, it's also a Masterpiece Theater Monday post. It's two, two, two posts in one. Hold your horses. Had a great weekend, spent some time outside with the kiddos, made crab legs for dinner and ate waaay too many, and also made this dessert. Autumn Trifle with Roasted Apples, Pears, and Pumpkin Caramel Sauce. Holy schnikes it was GOOD. Labor intensive but worth it. Sorry, I gots NO photos.

This is my dilly-o - I get an indeer in my head - say autumn trifle - googley oooogle, and search til I find something that sounds nom-nom.

I may make it again for Turkey Day, along with my favey crockett pie - Banoffee Pie - which is basically banana toffee pie in graham cracker crust, and you can find at almost any pub in England and Ireland, and rest assured when I tell you I have been known to order it at every one that we have visited.

I am a not-so-traditional cook when it comes to cooking the Thanksgiving Day meal - I mean, we typically have turkey, stuffing, yada yada, but for instance, one of my favorite turkey recipes called for the bird to be shingled in strips of bacon. Uh, YEAH. Tell me what DOESN'T taste better shingled in bacon. If I thought I could get away with it, I'd do something completely non-traditional, like an authentic northern Italian spread.
So what are some of your turkey day non-traditional favorites? Share - this is a safe place.

And speaking of turkey day, let's talk scary movies. I have no idea why the movie Open Water has been on my mind - I saw it a few years ago, but it is seriously in the top five scariest movies I have ever seen, along with The Exorcist, The Ring, Paranormal Activity, and When A Stranger Calls (anyone who grew up babysitting in the 80s had the BEJAYSUS scared out of them watching When A Stranger Calls). If you're looking for a good scare, look no further....

So spill it - your favorite scary movies, and your non-traditional turkey day dishes. What? They go hand-in-hand, don't they? Aw, it's Monday, sue me.

Oh I still get all freaked out over Watcher in the Woods (you know that vintage Disney film). As fpt Thanksgiving recipes go...I have yet to do any of the cooking. Parents and in-laws have always done all of the cooking.

Question for you Shan - Where is your favorite source to get all of your snazzy recipes?

Cathy - I could not get into Blair Witch - in fact, I had to leave the theater because I was literally getting motion sick from watching it.

Oooooh, Watcher In the Woods is an oldie but a goodie.

Christina - I get most of my recipes from FoodTV, but also get a good amount from epicurious (or a handful from wherever google leads me).

I have a huge extended family, so I've done Thanksgiving dinner for 30+ people. Granted - I don't do every dish for that many - guests each bring something, but I'll do the main dish and a side or two, along with dessert.
