I've been thinking a lot lately about why I started this blog (because Amy and I thought we should share our special purpose with the world), and what I hope to accomplish from it (fame, fortune, a Lifetime movie of the week?). It was really just for fun, a creative outlet to talk nonsense about stuff we love - fashion, design, craptastic reality TV. It seems lately though, it has become more about "the numbers" to me - how many followers do we have? Why don't we have more? Why aren't there 75 comments on each post? Do I suck? I MUST suck, or more people would love the blog. I mean, how stupid is this? It's like stepping on the scale each morning, which I must confess, I also do - and I swear it can set the tone for my whole day. Ridic, right? Yet I still do it. It's a compulsion.

I think I have been coming to the realization, though, that where the blog is concerned, I need to get back to my roots, so to speak. And it just so happens that yesterday, one of my favorite bloggers (Carey from Corks and Caftans)
blogged about ANOTHER favorite blogger (Christina from Second Skin). Her post really resonated with me, probably because both bloggers are adept at keeping it real. Yes, they are fashion bloggers, but both leave the reader (THIS reader, at least) with the thought - huh, I could do that! It's not all about $800 bags and $1,500 shoes, and they don't just post pretty pics with no substance (and no offense to anyone who owns $800 bags and $1,500 shoes - if you can do it, more power to you, but my budget is my budget, and it has never been in that range, I can tell you!).

I kind of feel like that's where I'm headed lately - photos with nothing in between. Sure, I do my smart-assery to describe everything, but what REALLY moves me about Carey and Christina are their words. Carey is sarcastic and hilarious and smart and cool, and Christina posts gorgeous photos and gorgeous writing. I'll just say what I said in my comments to Carey yesterday: It’s like poetry, or a really great novel, but totally uncontrived. You really get that there is a real, live, actual person behind the blog, who has great days and sh!t days that has the same self-doubt that we all have but that most of us (myself at the top of my list) fake for the sake of the blog, whether or not it works.

Two things I have always loved that I have really gotten away from are poetry and photography. Over the past few days I have decided to try to make time for both again, and hope to share with you the results of this little experiment. We'll see what happens. So I have said all that to say this - I am really trying to rededicate myself to posting some substance along with what I hope is a little style, some fun, some trivial, and of course, craptastic reality TV. Wish me luck.

Merci,
Shan

Awwww, thank you all. I seriously appreciate your sweet comments. I don't know why I have this need for affirmation every now and then. I'm fragile...sniff, sniff...

Honestly, it's not like I'm making a huge change in blogland, I just feel like sometimes there should be more THERE there, ya know?

Love and hugs and French kisses to all!

Agree, agree, agree. I also started blogging just for fun, then it turned into a business thing. However now I mix the two together so I can give my readers a mix, and I find I get the most comments from being personal and sharing my life with others.
